Comms Portal

The Comms Portal is Meta's central hub for all things Communications and Public Affairs, designed to empower employees and partners in crafting messaging with the right tone, visuals, and funding. With a bold, navigation-focused design, it ensures seamless access to key resources and features custom search capabilities integrated with Meta AI.

Built for scalability, the portal leverages a robust framework of bespoke components, enabling developers to spin up pages in minutes. Its typography-driven design minimizes reliance on visual assets, streamlining content creation and reducing the need for external sourcing.

As Meta rapidly scaled, the lack of centralized documentation became a significant challenge, particularly for Communications and Public Affairs. Resources were scattered—some with owners, others without—making it difficult to find reliable information in one place. The Comms Portal was designed to solve this, providing a single source of truth while also enabling controlled partner access with monitored permissions.

Scalability and maintainability were top priorities. We recognized that onboarding content owners was critical to long-term success, so we built a WYSIWYG visual editor that allows them to manage content seamlessly. This editor integrates with our component library and supports key features like discoverability, navigation, and structured access, ensuring a flexible and sustainable system.

Things to keep in mind

The Reasoning

No centralized hub for Communications resources, leading to scattered and inconsistent documentation.

No secure way for partners to access key information and guidance.

Bottom up initiative to innovate and streamline communications infrastructure.

THE DYNAMICS

Resistance from Comms partners who wanted to retain sole ownership of their content.

Limited resources available until a successful proof of concept was established.

The Goals

Full adoption across Comms and Public Affairs.

Higher engagement, with more page hits than the scattered resources previously received.

Consensus on content ownership, with content owners empowered to manage their own resources through onboarding and training.

The Context

Existing internal search tools did not fully meet the needs of Comms partners.

Ease of use was a priority for both developers and end users to ensure seamless adoption.

Let's conceptualize

Simple, easy-to-use componentry and onboarding were key to driving content owner adoption, which was critical to the project's success. We developed extensive Figma libraries integrated with Meta's DimSum documentation system, linking to live CMS examples and backend component code—ensuring real-time updates with every edit.

We prioritized a minimal-asset design, allowing non-visual content owners to create pages that adhered to the design system while maintaining a high visual standard.

The Comms Portal became the central hub for all messaging resources, providing internal employees and external partners with access to voice, tone, and visual assets. This streamlined collaboration, enabling faster onboarding of vendors and key stakeholders while ensuring consistency across communications.

Beyond providing resources, the Comms Portal also offered general guidance and best practices to help users succeed across the company. It informed employees and partners about key trends, effective strategies, and successful narrative examples, ensuring a more cohesive and impactful approach to communications.
